Completely Mandinka

A significant ethnic and cultural mosaic, Mali stands out through its incredible variety of musical expressions. This programme embraces that world, thanks to the collaboration of Paul Chandler, a specialist based in Bamako, and the participation of some exceptional artists who offer inspired tradition, musical virtuosity and an invigorating modernity.

On opening night, Afel Bocoum and Mamadou Kelly present a tribute to the great Ali Farka Touré, whose music directly contributed to the diffusion of Mali’s image internationally. Following this, masked dances, linked to initiation ceremonies, and ritual songs of the hunter fraternity introduce the cultural region of Wassolou. The great Mah Damba, whose talent is recognised far beyond Mali’s borders, presents the art of the Mandinka griots. This programme, rich in discovery, also includes a puppet show of the fabulous Madinka epic Soundjata, a world-premier screening and dance workshops.
