ALPINE HORN
with Balthasar STREIFF
Beginners; intermediate/advanced
Trained at the Lucerne Jazz School (trumpet and vocals), Balthsar Streiff also studied sculpture at the Haute Ecole of Design in Bale and the baroque trumpet at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. His practice of the alpine horn has lead him to experiment in a variety of domains, such as fine arts, experimental music, theatre, film and literature.
In 1996, he created Stimmhorn with the vocalist Christian Zehnder, a project that would go on to have international success. He is also the founder of Hornroh, a quartet of wind players that creates poetic, powerful music to the sound of the alpine horn and other instruments from this family.
During this workshop, the introductory class will explore the fundamental techniques and natural sounds of the Swiss and related traditions. Those with experience will deepen their understanding of embouchure, breathing and intonations by learning traditional and modern pieces, as well as working on improvisation.
