ORISHA DANCES FROM BRAZIL

with Rosangela SILVESTRE

accompanied by Letho NASCIMENTO, Alysson BRUNO and Teco CANINDE

Beginners; intermediate/advanced

Choreographer, teacher, dancer and creator of her own dance technique, Rosangela Silvestre is originally from Salvador de Bahia. After studying choreography at the University of Bahia, she completed her training by studying modern dance and numerous contemporary and traditional expressions.

She has trained a number of dancers and created choreographies for the Ballets de Bahia and other contemporary dance companies. The constant development of her research and dance has led her to collaborate with the jazzman Steve Coleman. Using the voice is an integral part of her work, as the CD Voix de la Nature (2011) reflects.

Inspired by sacred Afro-Brazilian dances, the classes focus on the study of the Orisha divinities’ movements, based on the archetypes and symbols that define them. The interaction between the dance and the traditional rhythms allows one to describe, by movements and gestures, scenes from the life of the divinities.
