PERSIAN DANCES

With Shahrzad KHORSANDI

accompanied par Zia MIRABDOLBAGHI

Beginners; intermediate/advanced

Born in Iran, Shahrzad has been immersed in dance since childhood. Based in the USA, she studied dance and stage arts, and discovered numerous disciplines such as jazz, ballet, East African dances, Afro-Haitian dance, flamenco and Persian dance.

Using her great knowledge of Persian culture, Shahrzad has established a glossary of Persian dance. She has worked as a pioneer to safeguard this patrimony, which has been banned in Iran since 1979.

The traditional dances of Iran can either have tribal and regional origins, or they come from dances of the court. Simultaneously fluid and rhythmic, they place an accent on the use of the hands and wrists. Persian dance and music are equally important in ritual celebrations as in community social life, thus bringing together several generations. Students who regularly practice Asian or Eastern dances can follow the intermediate/advanced classes.
