SPEED CARAVAN
Arab-Andalusian volts
Arab-Andalusian music, Algerian chaabi, electro and rock all collide at the heart of Speed Caravan’s astounding repertoire. Here traditional melodies and ancient arabesques rub up against electro-rock original compositions and flamboyant covers (The Cure, Chemical Brothers). Led by the electric oud virtuoso Mehdi Haddab (co-founder of DuOud and nicknamed the Eastern Jimi Hendrix), the group, which has existed for close to ten years, has created an exhilarating mix that thrives with finesse, energy and experimentation. Signed from its beginnings to Peter Gabriel’s label Real World, and supported by acts like Alain Bashung, Rachid Taha, Rodolphe Burger and Asian Dub Foundation, the quartet revels in regularly surpassing the speed of sound.
