THE SACRIFICE OF DAKSHA

Daksha Yaga

This flamboyant legend, in the spirit of Kathakali, tells of the conflict between a father and his daughter. Sati, the daughter of King Daksha, marries the god Shiva against her father’s wishes. After their marriage, Daksha goes to Mount Kailash, where Shiva resides. But Nandikeshwara, the guardian of this place, refuses to let him pass. In an act of revenge, the king organises a great sacrifice for all the gods, without inviting Shiva. Furious, Shiva creates two monsters that kill Daksha and throw his head in the fire. Shocked by this cruelty, the gods appeal to Shiva’s compassion to bring Daksha back to life.
