Kathakali introduction

Stage de Danse

with master Narippatta Narayanan Namboodiri, assisted by Julien Touati

Both dance and theatre, Kathakali is of particular interest to actors. This workshop looks at the codified facial expressions and hand gestures, which are animated by structured body movements, and at the rhythmic work and fluidity of movements.

Madalam and Chenda drums

Percussion workshop

with masters Kalamandalam Unnikrishna and Kalamandalam Prakash, assisted by Michel Lestréhan

Percussion instruments are taught purely through oral transmission. It begins with striking a wooden trunk with sticks before progressing onto the maddalam and chenda drums. Learning is structured around rhythmic syllables: each strike is associated with a word, a sound, thus linking it to rhythmic cycles (talam).
