The rubab is the emblematic instrument of Afghanistan. Its deep tone – produced by gut strings and enriched by sympathetic notes – is immediately identifiable. Daud Khan Sadozai is among the best contemporary performers of the rubab, which he studied under the great master Mohammed Omar. His style, which is both classical and popular, provides a fabulous illustration of the great Afghan musical tradition.
