UYGHUR DANCE
by Mukaddas Mijit
The Uyghur dance of Xinjiang (the autonomous region in northwest China) stems from multiple influences, notably Buddhist, Zoroastrian, Islamic, Manichaean and Turkish. The dance is characterised by the finesse of its gestures and positions, inseparable from the music that accompanies them. Mukaddas Mijit was trained from an early age at the Xinjiang dance institute. Today she is based in Paris where she continues to develop an artistic practice that explores the spiritual meanings of dance.
