TRIBUTE TO ALI FARKA TOURE

AMR-Sud-des-Alpes,
10 rue des Alpes – 1201 Genève

Tribute to Ali Farka Touré

Afel Bocoum : chant, guitare
Mamadou Kelly : chant, guitare

Long-term collaborators of the unforgettable Ali Farka Touré, the most African of bluesmen, Afel Bocoum and Mamadou Kelly are, like him, from Niafunké in the Timbuktu region. They played with the old master for nearly thirty years, but also took time to explore their own musical interests. Both guitarists and singers, Afel and Mamadou sing mostly in Songhai, their maternal language, but also in Bambara and Tamasheq, the Tuareg language.

In this intimate programme the two accomplices happily reveal the old secrets of Sahelian folk. Their songs evoke the evolution of Malian society, from forced marriages to the acknowledgement of women’s rights. At the confluence of the traditions, their tender and powerful voices harmonise and are enriched with instrumental motifs that are soft and warm like the wind on the dunes.
