Masked dances and music of the hunters

The Wassolou ensemble brings together some of the last practioners of age-old music and dances. This programme is a rare opportunity to experience the music, dance and village ceremonies of this vast cultural region situated in the south of Mali, at the border of Guinea and the Ivory Coast. One of its most spectacular expressions is the outing of the masks, which takes place at festivals where the supernatural mixes with the profane. A number of masked dances exist in Wassolou – as many for initiations and rituals as for pleasure.

Another ancient tradition is that of the hunter brotherhood, where harp-accompanied ecstatic songs allow communication with the spirits of the animals that have been killed and the djinns that haunt the forest. An important part of Wassolou music is the djembe-dominated percussive ensemble that accompanies masked song and dance.
