MAH DAMBA

Alhambra, 10 rue de la Rôtisserie – 1204 Genève

The great lady of Bamako

Mah Damba has one of the greatest female voices in Mali and is an artist of exceptional talent and charisma. She belongs to the prestigious Sissoko griot clan, who, for generations, have provided so many of the country’s great musicians. As the daughter and granddaughter of renowned singers, she has in turn transmitted her art to her children, in particular to her son Guimba, who accompanies her for this concert.

Musicians, singers, tellers of tales, dancers – the griots are the vessels of an inimitable art, which makes them essential participants in all of life’s important events. Today, their audience is international, and many of the numerous active African musicians on European stages share in this griot tradition.

An assured artist with a strong personality, simultaneously respectful of the elders’ teachings and profoundly creative, Mah Damba and her musicians deliver us the essence of griot art.
