Alhambra
With Sara Najafi, Imed Alibi, Emel Mathlouthi, Jeanne Chehral and Elise Caron
According to the Iranian mullahs, the female voice is a source of sin because it has the potential to awaken desire in men. Since the Islamic revolution in 1979 women have been forbidden to sing solo in public, unless they are performing for an exclusively female audience. In spite of this the young composer Sara Najafi, an engaged feminist and the sister of the director, plans to organise a concert where Iranian and foreign women would sing in front of a mixed public. Driven by her determination to liberate Iranian women from their cultural prison, Sara doesn’t hesitate to face censure and red tape.
