TRADITIONAL SONGS AND DANCE

TRANSYLVANIA

After long years of practising northeastern Romania’s various repertoires, the multi-instrumentalist Ioan Pop formed the Iza Group, because he wanted to preserve the spirit and social function of this music. Surrounding himself with the best musicians from his region, he has sought to make the rich Maramureş tradition known abroad, all the while continuing the intense musical activity in his home country that is intimately linked to everyday life (marriages, births, burials and various celebrations). The village in which Ioan Pop was born was one of Béla Bartók’s fields of study …. Far from institutional or touristic folk music, the Iza Group, with its violinists, improvisers, virtuosos, and celebratory dancers, plays music that embodies all the vitality of Romanian celebrations.
