Batucada is a collective musical genre involving an ensemble of extremely varied percussion instruments, led by the surdo drum. It originated in Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the twentieth century, but is also very present in the Northeast. Notably, Batucada is at the origins of samba schools, which compete each year during the carnival processions. Based in Gex, the Batucada Sambaloelek specialises in musical and festive street entertainment.
