Mahmud Guettat is Emeritus Professor at the University of Tunis, where he created the chair of musicology. He is also the author of numerous books, a great figure in Tunisian music, and has been described as a ‘memory builder’ by Médiapart. Through his activities and work, he has significantly contributed to the increased appreciation of Tunisia’s musical patrimony, and that of the Arab world in general. No one, therefore, is better placed than he to retrace the ud’s long journey of development over centuries and across territories. He will also cover the diversity of forms, styles and repertoires of the ud, an instrument that is so emblematic of Arab musical culture.
