DIKAKANYO

Conversation with oneself

‘A man, alone on the stage, remembers. He isn’t black – his skin is brown and his words click inside his mouth. He turns back towards the road travelled and measures the time, energy and struggle that were necessary for him to become a standing man.’

Is he the little dancer Setsouana or the great Xhosa boxer?

Over the course of the seasons and the accompanying changes in weather, the history of South Africa is evoked through the eyes of the father of nation, Madiba, and through the contemporary eyes of a son in exile searching for his identity.

Through a troubling mix of dance and theatre, the man surrenders and sets himself free: a powerful and anchored dance, a return to the African land, a dialogue between the desire to flee and liberation.  (Diwelé Lubi)
