KABUL ENSEMBLE

Afghani Inspiration

The Kabul Ensemble explores the Persian music of Afghanistan, a little-known – almost forgotten – repertoire. Over the course of centuries, the historical turbulence of this country has never ceased to disperse its musicians and to contain them in either silence or exile. Accordingly, the transmission of its heritage has been enduringly affected.

In order to revive the flames of tradition, the Kabul Ensemble has examined the furthest nooks and crannies of memory in search of buried themes, such as a motif or ornament that seemed lost forever. This quest into the past has also generated a new creative momentum: melodies that are sometimes fragmented are now completed, the instrumentation and compositions developed.

The artists of the Kabul Ensemble belong to a vast Persian musical diaspora that has spread across numerous countries, from Lahore to Budapest, Erevan to Cordoba, Tehran to Geneva. They are all holders of a double musical culture, of East and West, which constitutes an inexhaustible source of knowledge and inspiration for them.
