DANCES OF THE MAGHREB

Dancer and choreographer Saïda Naït-Bouda has collected traditional dances, and in particular dances of ritual and trance, from all across Northern Africa.

From the dance of the mares of Aurès and the Bedouins of Tunisia, to the Gnaouas dances from black traditions and the mysterious Touareg dance, you will travel all over the Maghreb via these dance ports of call.

Each day Sida will explain the history and significance of a dance that the class will look at. After the warm up come the basic steps, before performing the dance in space. Duos, trios, in groups – the dance will become collective, shared and then magnified by the veil that covers the body and highlights the movement.
