YAYLA TRIO FROM DENIZLI

Music from the Aegean see

Part 2

Hayri Dev : saz, üçtelli bağlama, düdük, song
Zafer Dev : saz, üçtelli bağlama, song
Kısmet Dev : saz, violin, song

The second part of the programme brings musicians from films to the stage. Their music, they say, finds its origins in women's throat-singing, which has since disappeared and which the men imitated with instruments, in order to make them turn in dance. This repertoire comprises lively tunes, performed to haunting rhythms, alternating with slow and solemn dance tunes called zeybek. While this music once featured at winter gatherings or pastoral reunions, it is now only played at weddings during the warmer months (April-October).

Among the instruments from the region, there are two singularities, the üçtelli bağlama with three strings, without doubt the smallest lute in the world and the duduk, a small flute made from young pine branches. The other instruments are more current: the standard size saz and the violin.
