Flamenca Guitar
by Etienne Mayerat
Classes focus on:
- the different flamenco styles (Soleares, Alegrias, Bulerias, Sevillanas etc)
- study of each piece’s structure (rhythm, falsetas…)
- accompaniments for song and dance
- instrumental technique: rasguedos, alzapua, picado, tremolo etc
Classes aim to pass on flamenco’s different forms, particularly those of the guitar. This includes studying the rhythmic and harmonic aspects of the principal styles (palos), as well as their cultural context. Flamenco guitar technique offers many possibilities on the guitar, whether in a group or solo. These possibilities are explored while respecting the demands of each genre. Teaching principally follows the oral method and allows the student to develop listening and rhythm skills. Each class can be recorded and tablatures are also provided.
Etienne Mayerat
An encounter with flamenco in 1988 was so decisive for this vaudois that he immediately began studying guitar. Lengthy stays in Grenada and Seville allowed him to develop his playing, as did his training with prominent artists.
In 1988, he played in Seville’s Alfonso Pavon. In 1992, he formed the Matita de Romero ensemble, with whom he performed in Switzerland and France. In 1994, he participated in the recording of a CD, Musique à la croisée des cultures and then, in 1996, directed part of Bernardo Mendes’ musical Homenaje a F.G. Lorca. He has also collaborated regularly with Augustin de la Fuente.
Currently, he is focusing on teaching, as well as accompanying dance classes.
