Born in Tehran to a Kurdish family, Shadi Fathi trained on the setar under Ustad Dariush Tala’i, a grand master of the tar and setar. She became a concert performer at the age of fifteen and then studied tombak with Arash Farhangfar and the daf with Mehrdad Karim-Khavari in order to round off her knowledge. In 2002 she moved to France and became involved with numerous projects (music, dance, theatre), which enriched her practice of classical Persian music. Shadi Fathi's website
This workshop presents the principal rhythms of Iranian Kurdistan. The focus is on the links between rhythm and poetry (through looking at the distribution of deep and high pitches), and subtly leading students to musical freedom and improvisation. The first part of the workshop is based around a Persian song and poem. Then each participant can chose a song or metric poem to work on individually.
Open to percussionists of all levels.
