An uncontested master of the Bulgarian bagpipes (gaida) and director of several traditional musical ensembles, Ivan Varimezov began his musical training with his uncle, a famous Bulgarian bagpiper. Since 2001, he has taught the bagpipes at UCLA and directed its Balkan Band. He has recorded numerous albums and received several awards for his contribution to traditional Bulgarian music. In this workshop open to instrumentalists of all stripes, Ivan will provide the keys for unravelling this repertoire, rich with ornamentation, and its asymmetric rhythms.
