Shadi Fathi trained on the setar under the great master Ustad Dariush Tala’I and became a concert performer at fifteen. She is inspired by other artistic disciplines and musical traditions. This master class covers the history and instrumentation of Persian music, offers an overview of Iran’s contemporary and classical modes, and includes introductions to the classical Persian repertoire (radif), the development of phrasing and rhythmic vocabulary in improvisation. This course is for musicians who already have a relative mastery of their instrument – instruments able to play quarter tones (oud, sayz, violin).
