The tradition lives on !

Trans-mission: this cycle presents three very different universes, which all share in the introduction of a new generation of promising artists: Barafolly, a joint-initiative musical training project developed in Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso) by Souleymane Coulibaly; Lieskan, a project led by Erik Marchand in Brest with the aim of reviving the folk songs of Brittany; and finally Varanasi Ras (the perfume of Benares) with Ravi Shankar Mishra, who continues to introduce kathak dance and its music to young talent.

On the occasion of the Ateliers d’ethnomusicologie’s thirtieth anniversary, this programme also presents the opportunity to pay tribute to artists who, like Souleymane Coulibaly and Ravi Shankar Mishra, have contributed to the identity of our association for a number of years.

The film Growing into Music by the ethnomusicologist and journalist Lucy Duran and the symposium that follows it highlight the theme of a changing-of-the-guard in traditional oral music, which is also reflected in the series of workshops and activities for the younger audience organised for this event – so the tradition lives on!
