THE OTTOMAN SOUL OF CELLO

Trio Segal, Özkök, Turkan (creation)

For Vincent Ségal life can only be lived to the full by embracing the diversity of its experiences. His musical journey confirms this: he has alternated between ‘classical’ and ‘contemporary’ repertoires, from the kora of West Africa to jazz.

He invites us to Ottoman lands with this trio, which was formed specifically for the Nuits du monde festival 2018. It is in the company of two virtuosos of Turkish classical music, Derya Türkan and Savaş Özkök, that Ségal has decided to strike out for new territories.

The subtle combinations of the cello and the kemençe, and the vigorous rhythms and meditative chants of the cithara kanun support and punctuate the poetic Sufi songs. The three collaborators have chosen to give free reign to the spontaneity of their inspiration. A music where the musicians truly engage with one another and are not afraid to take chances. Let yourself be carried away.

Vincent Ségal : cello

Savaş Özkök : voix, kanun (zither)

Derya Türkan : kemençe (viol)
