Uyghur photographer Kurbanjan Samat works to capture his native region, the Xinjiang, through portraits of this immense province’s inhabitants. Xinjiang, the ancient Chinese Turkestan, is the land of numerous ethnic minorities, of which the most numerous are the Uyghurs. But one also meets Mongolians, Kazakhs, Tajiks, Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Hans, Tatars and Manchus… Kurbanjan Samat’s photos capture the soul of these peoples who make up the ethnic mosaic of the Xinjiang.
