GUMBOOT DANCE
With Sam Tshabalala
ADEM Montbrillant
This workshop offers an introduction to the gumboot dance, the ‘dance in rubber boots’, which developed in the gold mines of South Africa during the period of apartheid. The black miners worked in almost total obscurity at the bottom of the gold mines. Their bosses realised that it was more profitable to equip workers with rubber boots than to manage the frequent halts in work due to infections or illness, or to drain the mines. The miners then developed a code of boot stomps and chain rattles as a means of communicating to one another.
