MUSICIANS FROM THE RAJASTHAN DESERT

Second set

Divana - Langas and Maghaniyars

Anwar Khan Manghaniyar : songs
Ghewar Khan Manghaniyar : kamaycha
Mehrudin Langa : sarangi
Feruz Khan Manghaniyar : dholak
Gazi Khan Barana : kartal

Princely, charming, outrageous with beauty and virtuosity, the Manghaniyar and Langa musicians and poets possess the majesty of their environment: Rajasthan. The Manghaniyar community from the Thar Desert lives in the region of Jaisalmer and Barmer, close to the Pakistan border. They favour the use of the kamaycha, a heavy string instrument with solemn tones. As for the Langas, they live in the Jodhpur region and use the sarangi, “the instrument of a thousand colours”.

The art of the Manghaniyars and Langas oscillates between sacred and popular traditions. Their repertoires are essentially made up of devotional songs called bhajan, epics and the mota git in an elaborate form, including the poetic introduction (doha) in free rhythm. The intensity of their singing is reinforced by a rhythmic duo of rare precision, made up of a drum (dholak) and the castanets (kartal).
