The Prasanna family comes from Benares and is firmly associated with the bamboo flute (bansuri) and the oboe (shehnai), an instrument that has been passed down the generations. The Benares musical tradition is known for its thumri, which privileges elaborate musical ornamentation.
Rajendra Prasanna masters both instruments with equal sensitivity. Although he considers himself a flautist, he performs just as often with the shehnai. He is accompanied here by his son, his student and the renowned tabla player Athar Hussain.
