GROWING INTO MUSIC
Film directed by Lucy Duran (2014, 68'), followed by a talk
Made from sequences filmed between 2009 and 2012, Growing into Music explores the manner by which children acquire their musical repertoires and techniques in different cultural environments. The camera captures privileged moments of musical apprenticeship in North India (Benares, at the Mishras’ and in Rajasthan) and in Azerbaijan; from Mali to Guinea; from Cuba to Venezuela. From pure oral transmission to more structured teaching in institutions, Growing into Music opens a window onto cultural diversity and documents the talent of some exceptional young artists, who reaffirm their musical tradition through their abilities.
The talk that follows the screening is an opportunity to discuss the transmission of world music in the twenty-first century. Led by Patrik Dasen, ideas will be fed by the experiences of Lucy Duran in the field in East Africa, Erik Marchand from Kreiz Breizh Akademi in Brittany and Laurent Aubert from the Ateliers d’ethnomusicologie in Geneva.
