The town of Huê was the last imperial capital of Vietnam. It preserves a vast cultural and musical heritage that dates from the Nguyên dynasty (1802-1945), of which the chamber music Ca Huê provides a remarkable record.
The dances of court, like the famous ‘Lantern dance’, were heavily influenced by the choreographies of the sung theatre Hát bội, as well as by the ritual ceremonies of Buddhism. Formerly these dances were interpreted as offerings and vows of goodwill, longevity, peace and prosperity.
