The artists

Khaled
Arman is an outstanding
musician. His musical training was threefold : he learned
the traditional music of Afghanistan from his father,
and he has also studied Indian music and Western music. After
playing the guitar with the Orchestra of Radio-Kabul,
he went on to study in Prague, then Paris, where he
was awarded first prize in the international Guitar
Competition organised by Radio-France. He also composes
electoacoustic music .
He has taken the technique and
musicality of the rubâb (short-necked waisted
lute) to a high degree of perfection, basing his playing
on that of the sarod of India and Pakistan, which itself
evolved directly from the Afghan rubâb. |

Hossein
Arman, Khaled's father,
was a singer and composer of repute in Afghanistan before
the political situation there forced him into exil.
In the 1950s and 60s he was one of the pioneers of the
Afghan folksong revival, and made many recordings that
circulated both in Afghanistan and abroad. He was also
a member of Kabul's first official theatre company.
Hossein Arman knows hundreds of traditional songs, which
form the basis of the ensemble's repertoire.
His voice is absolutely genuine
and very recognisable with its warm, stirring texture. |
 |
Osman Arman grew up in a family
of musicians and quite naturally became a flautist,
playing tulak, a transverse flute made of bamboo.
His solos show the distinctive aesthetic of the traditional
Afghan style and its many regional ramifications. |
