Banzo, a term that evokes the melancholy of Brazilian slaves who were torn from their native Africa, is expressed in this mix of vital percussive energy and pain conveyed by the lamenting harmony of the guitars. Through a suite of compositions especially created for this project by the great percussionist Edmund Carneiro, three Brazilian guitarists – heirs of Villa-Lobos, of choro and the samba – come to shed their arpeggios, like sobs held in the body’s rage, echoing the rhythms of the master Carneiro’s atabaque drums.
