ANDALUSIAN MUSIC OF MOROCCO

Omar Metioui et l’ensemble Al-Armawi (Morocco)

Born in Tangier, Omar Metioui is an experienced musician and researcher dedicated to the performance of Arabo-Andalusian music and the restoration of its instruments. In 2015 he founded the al-Armawi ensemble in memory of the great music theorist Safiy al-Din al-Armawi, who lived in thirteenth century Baghdad and worked on synthesising the musical styles of his time. This same spirit is found in the musicians of Al-Armawi today, whose repertoire stretches – with the particular care shown to the purity of sound and melodic lines – from the Maghreb to the Mashreq and Turkey.
