But musically I think we have understood something.” These words, which Fatoumata Diawara hurls at Ahmed Ag Kaedi in the soft light of Bamako, sums up her view on Mali, the country where music was banned following the fall of the north to Islamists. Fatoumata Diawara and Ahmed Ag Kaedi feature, as do Bassekou Kouyaté and Master Soumy... Mali Blues seeks out these seminal musicians, gathers their words and reveals their art. Through the layering of these portraits, the incredible richness of the Malian music scene is evoked.
