Popular well beyond the borders of its native Andalusia,
flamenco has fascinated a wide audience for years, outside
of any specific cultural reference. There is a kind of
magic that infuses the grand moments of flamenco, where
it’s as if a spirit takes over the performers and
grabs hold of their bodies, voices and souls, in a sort
of trance that the audience is inexorably called upon
to share. This instant of grace is what aficionados call
duende, a word that could be translated as “imp”,
which does well to evoke the unique and enchanting nature
of Flamenco.
With its ingredients, which include cante (song), baile
(dance), toque (guitar) and palmas (clapping), flamenco
expression does not stop evolving with each successive
generation, while still respecting the principal structures
of the music. Siguiriyas, soleares, bulerias, alegrias,
fandangos, tientos or tangos…the many forms that
an artist must master also serve as the building blocks
for endlessly renewed creativity. The invited artists
promise to produce this in an incredible demonstration.

Adela Campallo grew up in Seville, where
she began dancing from a young age. After training with
Jose Galvan and Manolo Marin, she performed at major festivals
and worked with renowned dancers. She has put Campalleria
together with her brother, Rafael Campallo, who is also
a dancer. A rich programme, majestic dance and a deep understanding
among the performers provide for moments of grace and intense
emotion.

Dominique Abel only films flamenco. With
two flamenco documentaries under her belt, she now traces
the roots of Gypsy music in Las Tres Mil de Sevilla, a cultural
centre point and flamenco hotspot. As the city prepares
for a concert honouring the Gypsy poet Pepe Montaya, each
encounter in the street or at home promises the rhythms
of the guitars and palmas. Everyone’s pains and joys
are poured into the music.

This exceptional evening presents “A Cinco Voces”,
a project that naturally developed form the friendship of
5 female singers. Continuing on in Andalusia’s cante
jondo tradition, they cultivate the art of sublime emotion
or duende.
Authentic, explosive and moving, La Tana,
Mari Pena, Mari Vizzaraga, La Fabiola and Hermini Borja
perform with dancer, Carmen Lesdema, and guitarists Dani
Mendez and Antonio Moya.
The art of flamenco continues to grow worldwide
with the aid of choreography, concerts and classes. It is
within this context that the multimedia artist Myriam Rambach,
conference speaker Anne-Marie Virelizier and choreographer
Cécile Aspara decided to explore the mysterious history
of this art. The aim of this conference is to offer a global
idea of flamenco and to present different approaches to
it.

Originally from Andalusia, the Cortes family
emigrated 4 generations ago in search of a better life before
finally settling in the South of France. They brought their
ancestral tradition of flamenco with them, which remains
a strong passion.
With their personal touch, knowledge and
nomadic experiences, the Familia Cortes’ flamenco
has an essential vitality and remains true to its roots.
It is a way of life.
